It is not surprising that this event was started, considering the continual efforts of the Piazza-Vila Association for the Defence of Local Traditions to keep alive and improve the traditions of the past. The idea was to add another kind of contest to the challenge football match, this time using boats, in honour of the glorious past exploits of local oarsmen. Apart from the unusual character of the event, additional atmosphere is given by its spectacular eveninsetting; the lake near the shore is illuminated with special-effect lights marking the lanes of the race, the rounding mark, and the buoy bearing the victory flag, which is taken by the helmsman after diving into the water, swimming to the buoy and climbing the rope.
